Skills audit, competencies and management training

The Project

We worked with the departmental head to develop a skills audit and competency framework for the international web team of this high tech company.  The technical work revealed a requirement for newly promoted team leaders to undergo some management training designed to help them learn what it means to be a team leader and the skills involved.

Our Role

Our initial work focused on designing the skills audit with the team leaders and involving them in developing the tool and a self-assessment process.  At the same time we developed a competency framework to articulate the skills people needed to demonstrate alongside their technical competence.  From this exercise we developed a two-day training programme based around interactive workshops to provide more learning opportunities for the team leaders to develop their skills and practice them in a non-threatening environment.

Outcome

Work is ongoing, and we have conducted three team leader courses to date.  The next stage was to deliver a more advanced level course which will provide the team leaders with a chance to refresh their skills and take their learning to a deeper level.
